“Wise Lions”: the chess tournament that brought together children from all over Cyprus
On the 16th of March Trinity Private School, in cooperation with Shah Mat Masters Academy, held a large-scale chess tournament - ‘Wise Lions’. Over 100 participants from all over Cyprus gathered to test their strategic training and demonstrate their intelligence.
The tournament proved that chess is not only an exciting competitive game, but also a powerful educational tool.

Our After-school Club is an important part of the educational process, where students deepen their knowledge and develop key competences. Among the sports clubs, a special place is given to the Chess Club, a space where analytical and strategic thinking, logic and concentration are developed. These skills are critical for success in studies and future professional activities, for example in such fields as: business, finance, IT and many others.
The Wise Lions competition was held in five age categories:
- Under 6 years,
- up to 8 years old,
- up to 10 years old,
- up to 12 years old,
- over 12 years old.
This format made it possible to create equal conditions for participants of different ages and levels of training.
Modern research in the field of neurophysiology confirms that chess players actively use both hemispheres of the brain, which speeds up non-standard decision-making and adaptation to new tasks. The hippocampus, the area responsible for memory and strategic thinking, is particularly active. Children who regularly play chess have 15-20 per cent faster neural connections between key areas of the brain compared to their peers.
For students attending our Chess Club, participation in tournaments such as Wise Lions is an opportunity to apply the techniques learnt, test their skills in games against participants from other schools and gain valuable competitive experience beyond the classroom.
